Process Piping Fundamentals


Course Description

This training course is designed to give a detailed discussion of the subject of Process Piping Fundamentals with emphasis on the basic fluid mechanics aspect. The course also covers the design, fabrication, inspection and testing of Process piping in accordance with Process Piping code B 31.3 will be delivered such a way that most of technical terms and concepts will be clarified by both code statements and examples.

Important Piping requirements will be explained in a simple, straight forward manner, including the Short-cut methods in designing of Pipes, Pipe fitting and Flanges. The course is designed such that no previous background in ASME code is necessary. However, those familiar with the code will find the course immensely useful as regards understanding the code by “letter and spirit “and gaining a thorough systematic practical insight of the code.

Course Objectives

  • To familiarize participants with the main concepts and technical terms of fluid mechanics.
  • To introduce participants to the concepts of flow of fluid.
  • To explain to participants the basic concepts of liquid flow and gaseous flow.
  • To provide knowledge for carrying out pressure drop calculations and pipe line sizing.
  • To introduce participants with various design rules, material selection, fabrication, erection and testing of piping.
  • When, where and how to conduct NDT of piping and the acceptance Criteria.
  • How to Conduct and certify pressure testing.

At Course Completion

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Appreciate the meanings of different technical terms and concepts used in process piping design.
  • Be able to choose the appropriate Pump, valve for a certain application
  • Carry out certain types of pressure drop calculations.
  • Choose the right pipe size for a specific fluid flow.
  • Apply the pump characteristics curves for intended application.
  • Relate different physical properties to fluids and design of piping circuit.

Training Methodology

Training will be delivered mainly through lectures with emphasis on practical examples and case studies. Practical sessions would be provided when and wherever possible.

Piping design engineers, process engineers, plant operating engineers and managers, Chemical/ mechanical engineers with or without experience in piping design. Inspection people, maintenance engineers and technicians and people involved in trouble shooting of plant operations will also find this course immensely beneficial
